In 2021, Itrend initiated a nationwide inventory of public infrastructure in which information was collected on the geolocation, economic valuation and physical characteristics of the structures. Following a review of international experience on mechanisms for securing critical public infrastructure, information on various characteristics was collected from a representative sample of more than 1,200 assets. Based on an extrapolation of the data obtained from the inventory sample to the more than 14,000 public assets identified, an exposure model was generated, compatible with existing hazard and vulnerability models for the calculation of seismic risk, in order to allow other actors to carry out studies using these data sets.
Both the results of this asset register and the exposure model are available in the Itrend Resilience Data Platform. The purpose of this analysis is to provide tools to the State of Chile to determine the relevance of contracting specific insurance to cover the repair costs of critical public infrastructure affected by disasters triggered by low recurrence natural hazards.
